From Johannesburg's OR Tambo International airport, Welgevonden Game Reserve is a short 3 hours drive, on excellent roads, or 45 minutes by air.

Guests can arrive by their own means, or we can arrange private road transfers from OR Tambo International Airport, Pretoria or Johannesburg or private air transfers to one of Welgevonden Game Reserve's two private airstrips. Helicopter transfers can also be arranged if required. Please contact us for pricing.

If traveling by road, you will be met by our private guide at the Welgevonden Game Reserve West Gate, 

 

If arriving by your own means, you will leave your car at the West Gate on the free parking just after the entrance gate, for the duration of your stay. Individual cars are not permitted inside the reserve. Therefore, please make sure to take all the belongings from your car that you may need during your stay with you.

If using a GPS / Google Maps, please make sure to take the route via Vaalwater, not through Thabazimbi (the bridge on the gravel road between Thabazimbi and the Welgevonden West Gate is broken).

 

  • From Johannesburg/Pretoria, take the N1 towards Modimolle

  • Get off the N1 at Modimolle, turn left on R33 towards Modimolle

  • Drive through Modimolle in the direction of Vaalwater / Lephalale on R33

  • Drive through Vaalwater, continue straight on R517 in the direction of Lephalale, after the Spar & Total station at the Vaalwater exit (do not follow R33 from there).

  • Drive approximately 48kms from Vaalwater town exit to Bulge River / Schoongelegen turn off.

You will have passed Welgevonden game reserve signs to South Gate, East Gate and Main gate (on your left from Vaalwater).

​

  • Turn left on the gravel road in the direction of Schoongelegen, just after the Welgevonden Game Reserve West Gate sign. There is a manual boom gate with a guard. Please tell the guard that you are going to Welgevonden West Gate so that he can let you through.

  • Drive for approx. 16.5 kms on the gravel road to the West Gate Entrance (on your left).
